2008 Maple Lane Farms Corn Maze

Maple Lane Farms 10th Annual Corn Maze is in full swing as Halloween approaches. On Friday, October 17th, the corn maze becomes haunted and stays haunted until October 31st.

In addition to the corn maze, there are activities such as hayrides and rock wall climbing as well as a country store.

New Shipyard to Build Superyachts

A new shipyard in Greenback, being built by Christensen Shipyards Ltd. of Vancouver, will produce yachts up to 230-feet long. The 500,000 square foot plant already has orders for two 225-foot yachts. Vessels this size can cost upwards of $100 million each. The company will start to assemble the first hulls in January 2009.

Maple Lane Farms Lawsuit

Maple Lane Farms in recent years has been transformed from just a farm to an agritainment mecca for the surrounding counties. In 1999, the farm held its first corn maze. Since that time, it has increased its entertainment portfolio to include multiple concerts and festival during the year.

The ever increasing crowds prompted a neighbor of the farm to take action to limit the crowded concerts and festivals. V. J. Shore complained to the Blount County Board of Zoning Appeals about the loud noise and increased traffic. The board replied by limiting the farm to one concert per year.

That wasn’t enough. Shore took legal action and sued the Maple Lane Farms in February in hopes of ending all entertainment events at the farm.

The story has taken another turn. Shore is suing Building Commissioner Roger Fields and county mayor’s attorney Rob Goddard. She alleges that they hurt her reputation in the community and subjected her to ridicule and hatred.

New & Improved Greenback School

Greenback School received some much needed improvements over the summer. These improvements are not only on the physical building, but in the course of academics as well.

The school has had some cosmetic issues of late, but some new paint in some of the classrooms and a new HVAC unit has helped give the school and new look and feel. New gym bleachers are also on the agenda.

A teacher workshop to focus on the graduation rate has been organized. This initiative is aimed at raising the graduation rate at Greenback School, which is less than one percent lower than the national standard set by the No Child Left Behind Law.

There is also a sense of community urgency to make other needed improvements. Upcoming Community Work Days will allow volunteers to help out with on-campus projects.
